The good news is that various language schools around the world is offering Chinese learning courses but people often like to visit China to learn Chinese being in the midst of Chinese culture to better understand their way of life.

In fact, there are hundreds of Chinese dialects used by the people but the preference will be given to Chinese Mandarin language.
Mandarin Hour asked:

Parents in America are increasingly supporting the choice for their children to learn Chinese. They are aware of the rise in China’s economic development, and understand that their child will have the best opportunity to conduct business when they are older, after they graduate, by being able to speak Mandarin and learn to write Chinese.

In the study of Mandarin Chinese, students attain much more than just focus on words, grammar and character writing – they also gain more of a global attitude. It has been assessed that children in their elementary years who learn the Chinese language have expanded their intercultural views. There has also been a direct correlation in China’s growing role in global affairs and the availability of Chinese language studies offered in schools.

While it’s important to note the growing number of Chinese companies hitting the headlines, it is China’s relevancy in various global affairs that allows for Westerners to understand the impact China is having on the world. Beijing not only successfully hosted the 2008 Olympics but has also saturated the press with their constant medal wins. Both these points are critical for the internal image of China as well as how the world views the nation.

There used to be a time when learning another language was good for only certain careers. Today, parents realize that familiarity of other cultures, including learning a second language, is important regardless of the career due to the globalization of the economy. In a globalized workplace, there are multi-national employees that come together to bring an expanded vision of ideas for the marketplace. Parents are realizing that their children will be working in a team made up of ethnically diverse people and will need to expand their knowledge of world cultures in order to stand the competition.

laqu6444a asked:

If you are planning to visit any foreign country, one important thing you should have, along with a passport, air tickets, and an international credit/debit card, is a functional knowledge of English. No other language is as widespread as English. In terms of the number of speakers, the Chinese Mandarin is the most popular language in the world. However, it is rarely spoken or written outside the People’s Republic of China. On the other hand, the number of English speakers has steadily been increasing all over the world. In the UK, the USA, Canada, Australia, and a host of Commonwealth countries, English is the first-choice language.

English is also widely used and well understood in many other countries including India, South Africa, Singapore, Hong Kong, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and many former British colonies. Even in the countries where it does not have great *********** such as the Middle East, Latin America, and Eastern Europe, you can get things done if you have a working knowledge of English. It was reported recently that even the Chinese government had incorporated English education in the curriculum to pluck the benefits of outsourcing. All these indicate the necessity to learn the language.

Reasons For The Global Dominance Of English

English is the official language of correspondence in most countries by default when it comes to communication among other countries. French, Arabic, and Spanish are also used for this purpose, but none comes close to English. In addition, English is usually the official language for international business conferences, meetings and symposiums of the scientific and academic communities, film and art festivals, trade shows, and international summits. Moreover, English is by far the most popular language over the internet and other forms of electronic communication.

There are two reasons for its omnipresence on our planet and three, if you could add the widespread popularity of the internet as well. The first is the colonization agenda of the British empire in the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. During the course of the three centuries, the British Empire had expanded to large swathes of land all over the world. It was often remarked that the sun never set in the British Empire. In the process, the British rulers and missionaries established educational institutions in their colonies and laid a foundation for English teaching.

When the power and reach of the British Empire diminished, in came the USA as a global superpower. The dominance of the USA, not just the political dominance, but the cultural dominance as well, catalyzed the spread of the English language. Pop music, Hollywood movies, and pulp fiction became available in almost every country. In all these cultural aspects, English was, and still is, the default medium of communication.

The recent phenomena such as the spread of the internet and the growth of the outsourcing industry also provided momentum to the rise in popularity of English.

Therefore, if you plan to visit another country, you must have a basic knowledge of English. Even if you do not, it is always beneficial to learn to speak, read, and write English.

Adrian Edlington asked:

Mandarin Chinese is an interesting language. Partly because of it’s formidable reputation as a “hard” or nigh on “impossible” language to learn for us native Enlish speakers. What I’d like to do in this article is dispel some of the misnomers and mistruths surrounding learning to speak Chinese…

There are two main aspects of the Chinese language that scare most would be students: tones & characters.

Let’s take a look at the first. Yes, Chinese has four tones. These tones affect the meaning of words. If you mess up your tones you say something completely different from what you planned. For example, ma, ma & ma, depending on the tone could mean “?”, mother or horse…. or a host of other words.

Now you don’t want to go calling your mother a horse or a horse your mother, though the Chinese language newbie need not fret. Tones really aren’t as hard as you first think. Let me ask you a question:

Can you hum a tune? Do you sing in the shower, or sing along to the radio while driving in your car? If the answer is yes, then you can learn Chinese tones.

The reason people think they are so hard is because no-one knows how to teach them well. Native Chinese speakers learn their tones through mimicry as kids. As such, they’ve never had to actively “learn” tones, much in the same way as we’ve never had to actively learn basic English. We “do” English rather than “learn” English.

So, if you’re able to hum a simple tune, you are perfectly capable of learning how to speak Chinese, provided you take the right approach.

Remember I said the second thing we native English speakers find hard about learning how to speak Chinese is Chinese characters: the written system? Well you need not fear here either. There are literally thousands of Chinese characters, all with different meanings, though only a relatively small amount are used in daily conversation.

Just as in English, the native Chinese speaker communicates wants, needs and basic thoughts in basic language, and day-to-day Chinese is more direct and basic than our mother tongue. The secret to leaning Characters easily is to take a natural approach.

Namely, don’t try to run before you can walk, or walk before you can crawl. This translates into putting your emphasis on listening and speaking ahead of reading and writing. Learn the characters for words you can use in conversation. NEVER the other way around!

Trying to read and write ahead of listening and speaking is the fast way to boredom and frustration.

To wrap up; if you want to learn how to speak Chinese, then don’t go about it the wrong way. Do put your emphasis on learning the natural way: listening and speaking ahead of reading and writing.

Finally, don’t be scared by tones. If you can hum, you can learn how to speak Chinese.

Thanks for listening. I have lots more to add on these topics, so stay tuned!
